Program Overview

The Civics Program at La Sierra High School is a lifeskills curriculum within the adult English Language Development classroom. Classes study five civics units per school year, chosen by the teacher to best meet the needs, interests, and abilities of the students.

Program Design

The school year is divided into five instructional blocks. (See civics calendar.) For each block, teachers can choose from eleven different units that cover a variety of lifeskills topics. The teachers are given instructional materials and assessment instructions, forms, and resources, and deliver instructional material in the way that best suits their students. The teachers conduct the assessment and makeups, and then turn in the assessment results along with student samples.

Program Funding

Funding for the civics program comes from a federal grant called the EL Civics Grant (EL = English Literacy). The grant pays according to the number of Student Outcome Datasets (SODs) generated. To be paid for a complete SOD, the student must take both the CASAS pre and post test and pass a civics additional assessment. Each student can generate up to three SODs.

Funding generated from this grant and the SODs is used to pay teacher's salaries, purchase instructional materials, and much more.
